Week 2 | 9 Analogue form finding clouds

Airborne

The cloud is the main motif for the design concept as it is something that is constantly shifting in form and state, endlessly engaging the imagination. Its interpretation in a buildable structure suggests a freedom from gravitational forces and standard geometric typologies.

Within this terrain, there was an abandonment of floor-wall-ceiling relationships, and a thorough exploration of curvilinear, non-geometric forms. The removal of identifiable floors, ceilings and walls allows a greater exploration of what space is, and how elements can be used interchangeably.

The structures plan to be made from lightweight materials and suspended in the air off existing trusses.

Enshroud

Within the chosen site, existing circulation paths above the exhibit display cases suggest the existence of a middle ground of motion and activity. Currently, this space is only used for observing the sky and land transport exhibits, and the motion that is suggested within this space is not realised. To realise the full potential of the space, there was an exploration of movement, gravity, and the connection between the sky and earth. The final models show the forces of the aforementioned explorations and how they can be used to form interactive spaces for users.

from a cloud"

Fallen

The notion of fallen clouds feed to users imaginations as they encourage them to question the phenomenon. Through this, the aim is to support the users imagination by implementing imaginative responses to the idea of a playground.

The ground element challenges the mind of the user as it forces them to understand the notions of a cloud on the ground. The effects of gravity on a naturally floating object, and how gravity can be manipulated to form curvilinear or free forms that abandon recognised planar floor relationships is explored through this terrain.
